In 1997 it was decided to turn this partnership into a full service rug importing company, built to service the independent home furnishings retailers in the United States. Since then the scope of the company has changed with our warehouse now supplying rugs from India, China, Turkey in addition to Romania and Belgium to dealers in USA, Canada, Mexico, and Latin America. We also now provide customized products and programs to service the larger retail chains in North America. Still, the main focus of the company remains the same, and is based on the three principals of service, value, and fashion to our customers. Choosing the correct size of rug is actually quite a complex issue, although one that can be simplified by remembering that when all is said and done, it is your home, choose whatever size rug you are happy with. However, there are some fundamental considerations and a few simple rules which can help when trying to decide what size of area rug to place in your room. Always place your furniture within the room before choosing your rug, this will allow you to evaluate what size and shape of area rug would fit best. It will also let you test the placement of the rug to ensure it doesn’t infringe any of these basic guidelines set out below. Firstly, most designers recommend that you leave at least 18” of space around the edges of your rug, any less than this will make the space it is in seem smaller than it actually is. In rooms with less space, you may decrease this down to as little as 8”, as the shrinking effect is not so pronounced in a small sized room. If you are going to place a rug under a dining table, or any other piece of furniture that has one or more chairs around it, then it is best to leave at least 24” of rug around the table, to facilitate the easy movement of chairs, so that people may sit themselves without the chair legs snagging on the edge of the rug. Not only is this safer, the repeated wear placed on a smaller rug will eventually fray its sides. When placing a rug under a bed, a similar sort of overlap needs to be left. For a double or single bed, the overlap should be around 12 inches in width and about 24 inches for a King or Queen sized bed. Adjust the size of the rug accordingly, or leave a larger overhang if the bed is offset within a smaller room, or is placed against a wall. Leaving a larger overhang is the better long term option as this means that if you later move your bed, the rug will be large enough to accommodate such changes. Designers also consider having a heavily trafficked part of your home with half rug, and half flooring to be a bad design feature. If you constantly have to walk across the area with one foot upon the rug and one foot upon the floor; it needs to be changed. Not only is this potentially hazardous but it will also cause the rug to wear in a non-uniform manner along that edge. These basic conventions are designed to make certain that your floor rug is shown off in the best way, whilst making sure that your floor is not dangerous and that your rug will not be unnecessarily worn. A rug of the correct size, placed in the right way, can be an enhancing accessory to any room. So when you ask yourself "What size rug do I need?" think over these points, go with your heart and you are sure to get the perfect rug. |
